Join the emma Doctoral Summer School 2025 in Brussels!

We are excited to invite you to the emma Doctoral Summer School 2025, hosted by imec-SMIT-Vrije Universiteit Brussel from September 2-5 in Brussels, Belgium. This event is a unique opportunity for early-career researchers—both PhD students and early postdoctoral scholars—to advance their research and network with leading academics and industry professionals. Applications are open until May 1, 2025.

As a flagship initiative of the european media management association (emma), the summer school offers an engaging international environment that focuses on key areas to support participants’ professional and academic growth. The event will feature a variety of sessions, including:

  • Career Development Workshops: These sessions will cover strategies for publishing in academic journals, developing research collaborations, and building a professional portfolio.
  • Research Feedback Sessions: Participants will present their ongoing research and receive constructive feedback from senior academics and peers.
  • Methodology Workshops: Sessions will explore innovative research methods, with a particular focus on leveraging AI-powered tools for analysis.
  • Industry Engagement: Invited speakers will lead discussions on current trends in digital transformation, policy, and market dynamics within the media sector.

The themes covered during the summer school include:

  • Digital Transformation of Media Industries
  • AI and Data in Media Industries
  • Platformisation in Media Industries
  • Interplay Between Policy and Markets

The summer school will feature lectures and mentoring from distinguished scholars across Europe, including Päivi Maijanen (LUT University, Finland), Castulus Kolo (Macromedia University, Germany), Tom Evens (Ghent University, Belgium), and Tim Raats (VUB, Belgium).

Program Details:
The program runs for four days, starting at 9 a.m. on September 2nd and ending in the afternoon on September 5th. The registration fee is 220 EUR for emma members and 260 EUR for non-members, covering participation, lunches, coffee breaks, and evening events. Travel and accommodation are not included, but special accommodation rates are available for participants.

Summer School Grant:
emma is offering up to five grants (each up to 400 EUR) to support PhD students and early postdocs facing financial challenges. These grants aim to help cover expenses for registration, travel, and accommodation. More information is available here.
